Dodgers Fans Show True Sportsmanship with Heartfelt Donations to Toronto's SickKids Hospital
Posted by Johnny Ice on November 10 2025

Dodgers fans may bleed blue, but this World Series proved they also have hearts of gold.

During the thrilling seven-game showdown between Los Angeles and Toronto, what started as friendly rivalry turned into an inspiring act of compassion. Fans from both sides joined together to support Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), raising more than $30,000 for pediatric care and research.

A Tribute to No. 51

Before the World Series began, Dodgers pitcher Alex Vesia announced he would miss the series to be with family during a personal matter. In a show of solidarity, Toronto pitchers Chris Bassitt, Seranthony Dominguez, Mason Fluharty, and Louis Verland honored Vesia by wearing No. 51 — his number — on their caps throughout the series.

That simple gesture sparked something much bigger. Fans and baseball commentators across North America began donating $51 each to SickKids in Toronto, creating a wave of goodwill that spread well beyond the ballpark.

Making an Impact

SickKids confirmed that donations reached $30,000 by the end of the series.

“This will advance care, research, and education for patients and families. Thank you for hitting it out of the park!” the hospital shared on social media.

Days after the Dodgers secured their second consecutive championship, Vesia shared heartbreaking news — his family had suffered the loss of their baby girl. The fan-driven campaign became even more meaningful, symbolizing how a love for the game can unite people in empathy and kindness.

Paying It Forward

According to The Toronto Star, the idea began when 150 Blue Jays fans donated to the Seattle Children’s Hospital during the American League Championship Series. Dodgers fans on Reddit then decided to keep the momentum going — proving that even in the heat of competition, humanity wins.

What started as a rivalry ended in a reminder of what sports are really about: community, compassion, and connection.
