Love at New Heights? Daredevil Duo Climbs Empire State Building and Appears to Get Engaged
A jaw-dropping stunt high above New York City has people wondering whether it was the world's most daring marriage proposal—or an elaborate publicity stunt.
Two masked climbers were spotted Wednesday scaling the spire of the Empire State Building, where they unfurled a banner that read:
"When the power of love beats the love of power the world knows peace."
Witnesses watched in disbelief as the pair, dressed in black and appearing to be without safety harnesses, stood atop the iconic skyscraper's antenna before carefully making their way down the latticework.
A Proposal in the Sky?
As they descended, video captured by local media appeared to show one of the climbers proposing. The couple embraced, kissed, hugged, and snapped selfies while perched hundreds of feet above Manhattan, adding to the speculation that the engagement was genuine.
However, it's still unclear whether the proposal was real or simply part of a carefully planned stunt.
Famous Rooftoppers?
Shortly before the climbers were spotted, Russian urban explorer Angela Nikolau posted a video to her Instagram Stories claiming she was at the top of the Empire State Building. Nikolau is well known for scaling some of the world's tallest buildings alongside fellow climber Vanya Beerkus.
The duo has gained a massive online following by documenting breathtaking—and often controversial—climbs across Europe and Asia. Fans quickly flooded their social media accounts with congratulations after footage of the apparent proposal began circulating.
The pair also starred in the 2024 Netflix documentary Skywalkers: A Love Story, leading many online to wonder if the latest climb was another headline-grabbing promotional event.
Taken Into Custody
Authorities responded as the climbers made their way down the structure, with police and emergency crews seen ascending the antenna. The two individuals were taken into custody after reaching the building, and officials say charges are pending.
The New York Police Department also warned of emergency activity and temporary road closures around the Empire State Building during the incident. Officials have not released additional information about the suspects or the investigation.
Not the First Climb
While unauthorized climbs of the Empire State Building are extremely rare, this isn't the first time someone has ventured onto its upper reaches. In 2023, actor and musician Jared Leto was granted permission to climb from the building's 86th floor to the base of its antenna as part of a promotional event.
Standing 1,454 feet tall, the Empire State Building remains one of the world's most recognizable skyscrapers—and Wednesday's dramatic climb has once again put the iconic landmark in the spotlight.
Whether it was a heartfelt proposal or a viral publicity stunt, it's safe to say this was a date that reached new heights.
