Raising a Child in Los Angeles Costs More Than $32,000 a Year, New Report Finds

If it feels like raising a family is getting more expensive every year, the numbers back it up.

A new report from SmartAsset estimates that it costs $32,191 per year to raise a young child in the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim metro area in 2026. That ranks L.A. as the 13th most expensive metropolitan area in the country for families with one child and two working adults.

The study compared 48 of the nation's largest metro areas using data from the MIT Living Wage Calculator, factoring in the additional costs of raising a child, including childcare, housing, food, healthcare, transportation, and other everyday necessities.

The Most Expensive Cities to Raise Kids in 2026

California dominates the top of the list, with three of the four most expensive metro areas located in the Golden State.

San Francisco topped the list, with families spending an estimated more than $43,000 annually to raise one child.

 




The Most Affordable Metro Area

At the opposite end of the rankings, Memphis, Tennessee, was named the least expensive metro area for raising a child, with an estimated annual cost of $19,922—less than half of what many California families pay.

A Few Cities Actually Got Cheaper

While costs continue to climb in most parts of the country, there were two exceptions.

According to the report, Richmond, Virginia, and Virginia Beach-Chesapeake-Norfolk, Virginia, were the only metro areas where the estimated cost of raising a child actually declined from 2025 to 2026. Nearby metro areas like Washington, D.C., and Baltimore saw little change during the same period.

Why Costs Keep Rising

The biggest factors driving up the cost of raising children continue to be:

  • Childcare
  • Housing
  • Food
  • Healthcare
  • Transportation
  • Other everyday household expenses

For many Southern California families, those rising costs mean budgeting carefully as essentials continue to become more expensive each year.

If you're raising kids in Los Angeles, the report makes one thing clear: while it's an incredible place to live, it also comes with one of the nation's highest price tags for families.
