Shohei Ohtani isn't just dominating Major League Baseball as both a powerhouse hitter and elite pitcher — now he’s adding author to his growing list of accomplishments.
The Los Angeles Dodgers superstar just announced the upcoming release of his very first children’s book, Decoy Saves Opening Day, available for pre-order now and set to hit shelves on February 3, 2026.

Inspired by his real-life dog, Decoy, the book follows the furry hero on baseball’s opening day. The big moment? Decoy is set to throw the first pitch — until he realizes he left his lucky baseball at home. What follows is a fast-paced, heartwarming race against the clock: Can Decoy retrieve the ball and make it back in time to save the day?
Ohtani co-wrote the book with author Michael Banks, and it features vibrant illustrations by Fanny Liem. While the plot may sound whimsical, it’s rooted in a real-life moment — Decoy actually “threw” out the first pitch at Dodger Stadium last season.
But this book isn’t just a fun story. Ohtani, a passionate advocate for animal adoption and rescue, hopes the project will shine a light on organizations that help dogs find loving homes. According to the book’s website, “While their fictional counterparts are saving opening day, Shohei and Decoy are working to help real-life animals in need.”
Decoy Saves Opening Day promises to be a must-have for young readers, dog lovers, and baseball fans alike — and a home run for a great cause. Pre-Order The Book Here
