A woman who claims a suspected prostitute and pimp beat her just blocks from her home is working with Atlanta police to find her attackers.
Valerie VanAntwerp, who is engaged to be married soon, has deep bruises from the beating that happened near Metropolitan Parkway on Thursday night.
VanAntwerp told Channel 2’s Tom Regan she is fed up with the sight of scantily dressed women working the streets in her neighborhood. VanAntwerp told Regan she made a comment to one of them as she walked home from a friend’s house.
VanAntwerp said the woman chased her down, grabbed her by the hair and threw her to the sidewalk. "She basically pushed me down, and her pimp came and beat me up," VanAntwerp said.
VanAntwerp told Regan a car then drove up, and a man got out and started beating her with a bottle tucked inside a sock.
"I was hit upside my head. I was hit on my arm and all the way down my back. Basically beaten with the bottle," said VanAntwerp. "I was very scared."
Atlanta Police have shown the victim pictures of women that have been arrested recently on prostitution charges to see if she might recognize one of them as her assailant. "Our vice unit has been hitting the area pretty hard to see if we can identify this woman and the male that was with her." said Atlanta police Lt. Steven Sheffield.
Others who live and work in the area told Regan that Metropolitan Parkway, once called Stewart Avenue, has long had a reputation for sex trade. They're hoping police can crack down on crime.
"We do see a police presence in this area. So I would hope it does get better. That was unfortunate for that lady," said resident Syvie Moses.
