A woman was arrested in New Haven on Tuesday after she was accused of stealing a wig from a beauty shop and then assaulting officers during her arrest.
Officers were called to the area in front of the Giaimo Federal Building on Court Street around 3:30 p.m., and when they arrived, they said they found officers that were already at the scene struggling with the crazed woman.
Lowpel Davis, 38, of New Haven, was uncontrollable, and began to kick the officers and scream at them. Police said additional officers were needed to control Davis.
After an investigation, police said they learned Davis stole a wig from the Sassy Beauty Supply Shop, which is located on Chapel Street.
The shop owner, identified as Jongyol Lee, told police Davis entered the store with another woman, and a short time later noticed one of his wigs was missing from a mannequin.
He said he reviewed surveillance video and saw Davis take the wig and conceal it and several other items in her bag.
Lee said he alerted his staff to prevent Davis from leaving the store, but that didn't work.
Davis then fled the store with a juvenile female she was with and she was chased by Lee and his 70-year-old father.
Lee told police Davis punched him and his father in the face, and also bit Lee's right biceps.
He said she bit him so hard that she ripped flesh from his body and spit it back in to his face.
Once handcuffed by police, Davis would not calm down and continued to thrash around on the cement.
Police said she also tried to kick out one of the windows inside a police car and was eventually taken to a windowless prisoner transportation van.
The officers at the scene were also taken to a local hospital to be treated for injuries they sustained during the wild ordeal.
Davis was charged with:
- Larceny
- Breach of Peace
- Criminal Mischief
- Assault
- Assault on police (2 counts)
Lee was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital to be treated for the bite and facial wound.
