CHP Cracks Down on Dangerous Driving Over July 4th Weekend

As Californians gear up for Independence Day celebrations, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) is stepping up patrols across the state in an effort to keep roads safe during one of the busiest travel weekends of the year.
CHP’s Mission: Save Lives
The CHP's Independence Day Holiday Enforcement Period kicks off Thursday, July 3 at 6:01 p.m. and continues through Sunday, July 6 at 11:59 p.m. Officers will be out in full force, targeting dangerous driving behaviors—particularly speeding, distracted driving, and DUI.
“The goal is simple: to save lives,” the CHP said in a statement.
A recent 24-hour enforcement effort earlier this summer showed just how serious the issue is:
-
Over 12,100 drivers were cited for excessive speed
-
860 for distracted driving
-
Nearly 500 for seat belt violations
-
Nearly 400 DUI arrests
-
Sadly, 11 people died in crashes during that single-day operation
What Drivers Need to Know
Whether you're heading to a backyard BBQ, fireworks show, or family road trip, the CHP urges drivers to:
If you witness a dangerous situation on the road, call 911.
Why It Matters
“Reckless driving and speeding have deadly consequences,” said CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee.
“Every driver has a responsibility to make safe choices behind the wheel.”
This year’s travel is expected to break records. According to AAA:
-
4.3 million Southern Californians are expected to hit the road
-
Nationwide, 61.6 million Americans will travel by car—up 2% from last year
Pro Tip: Travel Early
Traffic experts from INRIX say Sunday, July 6 will likely be the most congested day of the weekend. To avoid traffic jams, plan to hit the road in the early morning hours.
Stay safe, stay smart, and enjoy a happy and healthy Independence Day weekend!
