For many of us, stuffed animals aren’t just toys—they’re lifelong companions. From the moment we’re born, teddy bears and plush friends are there to comfort us, join our adventures, and hold onto our earliest memories. But years of love can take a toll. Fur fades, seams split, and stuffing wears thin.
That’s where Winey Bears Repair comes in.
What started as a small passion project has grown into a heartfelt family business dedicated to restoring cherished stuffed animals—and the memories attached to them.
A Family Business Built on Love
More than 40 years ago, Pennsylvania crafter Sally Winey noticed a simple but powerful need: well-loved stuffed animals were falling apart, and people didn’t want to let them go.
Her journey began in the 1980s when she started sewing handmade teddy bears for her own children. Money was tight, so she leaned on skills passed down from her grandmother to create meaningful, personal gifts. Not long after, a customer approached her with a special request—to repair a worn teddy bear that had belonged to her late son.
The emotional impact of that restoration changed everything.
Sally realized she could offer something truly unique: not just repairs, but a way to preserve memories. From there, Winey Bears Repair was born—first as a small “bear hospital” at craft fairs, and eventually as a full-fledged business.
A Mission That Resonates
Why do people hold onto stuffed animals for so long?
Because they’re more than fabric and thread.
Stuffed animals provide comfort during life’s hardest moments, accompany us on family trips, and offer a kind of unconditional love that never fades. They become deeply tied to personal memories—childhood milestones, loved ones, and even loss.
That emotional connection is what makes restoration so meaningful.
Meet the Team Behind the Magic
Today, Winey Bears Repair remains a true family operation.
- Sally Winey continues to lead as the founder and repair specialist
- Bill Winey, her husband, handles customer communication and returns
- Abby (their daughter) assists with repairs
- Shawn Cornelius (son-in-law) manages emails, cleaning, and shipping
- Even the next generation pitches in—granddaughters Cecily and Lucy help with stuffing and send each bear home with a hug
The business operates out of two in-home studios in North Carolina, keeping the process personal and hands-on.
How the Restoration Process Works
Each stuffed animal that arrives is treated with care from start to finish.
- Check-in & Evaluation – Every item is logged and reviewed along with customer notes
- Cleaning – A thorough but gentle cleaning process begins
- Repair Work – Tears are mended, stuffing replaced, and features restored
- Customer Communication – For more complex repairs, the team checks in to ensure expectations are met
- Finishing Touches – Each restored animal is sent home refreshed, often with a new bow and a certificate of restoration
Depending on the condition, the process can take anywhere from two to six weeks.
Stories That Stay With You
After restoring nearly one million stuffed animals, the Winey family has seen it all—but some stories stand out.
One especially moving case involved a pair of twins who each had identical stuffed animals growing up. After one twin passed away, he was buried with his sister’s bear, while she kept his. Winey Bears Repair restored the surviving stuffed animal, helping preserve a powerful connection between the siblings.
It’s stories like these that define the company’s purpose.
More Than Repairs—A Lasting Legacy
For Abby, the pride in Winey Bears Repair comes from two places.
First, the joy of returning something deeply meaningful back to its owner. Seeing customers reunited with their restored companions never gets old.
Second, the legacy her mother built.
What began as a way for a stay-at-home mom to support her family has grown into a thriving business that now supports multiple generations. Over the years, it has evolved from handmade bear production into a company fully focused on restoration—while still staying true to its roots.
Keeping Memories Alive, One Stitch at a Time
Winey Bears Repair isn’t just fixing stuffed animals—it’s preserving pieces of people’s lives.
Every stitch, every patch, and every bit of stuffing carries a deeper purpose: to keep memories alive and return comfort to the arms that need it most.
