Move over, In-N-Out. According to USA Today’s latest rankings, California’s top fast food burger isn’t from the chain you might expect.
The 2025 edition of USA Today’s 10Best list has crowned The Habit Burger Grill as the home of the best fast food burger in America for the second year in a row.
Headquartered in Irvine, The Habit won top marks for its fan-favorite Double Char burger — a flame-grilled double patty made from 100% fresh ground beef, layered with caramelized onions and other classic toppings, all served on toasted buns. The Habit first opened its doors in Santa Barbara back in 1969 and has been growing steadily ever since.
Meanwhile, In-N-Out, long considered a California icon, has continued its downward slide in the rankings. This year, it placed #4, after landing in the #2 spot in 2024 and #6 in 2023.
