Planning a summer getaway in 2026? Better start stretching that vacation budget. Between rising gas prices, airfare costs, and expensive hotels, even a quick weekend road trip can feel like a luxury these days. But if you’re craving a break without draining your bank account, a new study from WalletHub highlights the best U.S. destinations for affordable summer travel.

WalletHub analyzed 100 of the nation’s largest metro areas using 41 different factors, including flight prices, local expenses, attractions, weather, safety, and even the number of beer gardens per capita. Because apparently summer vacation statistics now include access to cold beer.

Topping the list as the best budget-friendly destination for 2026 is Atlanta, thanks to its combination of affordable travel costs, entertainment options, and family-friendly attractions. Coming in second is Orlando, followed by Austin at number three.

The rest of the Top 10 includes:

  • Washington
  • Honolulu
  • Tampa
  • Philadelphia
  • Salt Lake City
  • Cincinnati
  • Richmond

One surprise on the list? Oklahoma City landed at #13, while Tulsa came in at #15 — both ranking ahead of New York City, which finished 16th.

On the opposite end of the rankings, the study named Ventura County as the least budget-friendly summer destination in the country. The Southern California region, located just north of Los Angeles, includes upscale communities like Thousand Oaks and celebrity-filled neighborhoods that probably aren’t ideal for travelers looking to save money.

Other cities ranking among the most expensive destinations included LansingNorwalk, and San Jose.

If you’re trying to plan a fun summer trip without blowing your entire paycheck, the full rankings — along with category breakdowns — are available on WalletHub’s official rankings page.
