California's Sunshine Is Still a Big Draw for Americans Looking to Move

If you've ever dreamed of trading snow shovels for flip-flops, you're not alone. A new survey shows that better weather is the number one reason Americans are packing up and moving to a new state—and California remains one of the country's most popular destinations.

According to a recent Redfin survey of 4,000 U.S. residents, 22% of people planning an interstate move said better weather was their top motivation, making it the most common reason for relocating. It edged out concerns about climate risks and natural disasters (21%) and safety and crime (20%).

California Ranks Among the Top Destinations

When it comes to where people want to go, California ranks third nationwide, attracting 11% of prospective out-of-state movers. Only Florida (14%) and Texas (13%) ranked higher.

Within California, Sacramento has emerged as a popular destination for homebuyers looking for sunny weather while still offering a different lifestyle than many of the state's larger metro areas.

Weather Beats Cost for Many Movers

While housing prices and cost of living are still major considerations, many Americans appear willing to pay more for a place with year-round sunshine and outdoor living opportunities.

Other reasons people cited for moving to another state include:

• Climate risks and natural disasters (21%)
• Safety and crime concerns (20%)
• New job opportunities (19%)
• Lower cost of living (18%)
• Being closer to family (18%)
• Lower home prices (15%)
• Political preferences (12%)
• Access to legal abortion (8%)

In-State Movers Have Different Priorities

Interestingly, people moving within their current state aren't chasing the weather.

Instead, the biggest reasons for local moves are:

• Finding a better home or neighborhood (29%)
• Getting more living space (29%)

Only 9% of in-state movers said weather influenced their decision.

Natural Light Matters Too

Another Redfin survey found Americans also value sunshine inside the home. Nearly half (44%) said they'd rather have a smaller home with more natural light than a larger home that's darker. Only 24% preferred a bigger home with less sunlight.

Why Weather Is Winning

Redfin economist Yingqi Xu says weather has become an increasingly important lifestyle factor for many homebuyers.

Whether it's escaping harsh winters, enjoying outdoor recreation throughout the year, or simply boosting their mood with more sunshine, many Americans are prioritizing climate when deciding where to live.

Is California Worth the Move?

California's beautiful weather continues to attract newcomers, but it's still important to weigh the benefits against the state's higher housing costs and overall cost of living. For many, however, the opportunity to enjoy sunshine, beaches, mountains, and outdoor activities year-round makes the move worthwhile.
